Flags in Washington State were at half mast for young soldier, but what about Osama?

Upon hearing about the murder of Osama Bin Laden

These words, sent from Laurel to her parents ~

"I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  1. Thank you for posting this Rosie, I couldn't agree more.

I've been in England since this happened and I'm not sure of how the rest of England reacted but here at the Tagore festival all mention of what happened where similar to MLK's quote. One of the presenters, Clare Short, who resigned her position in government over England's involvement in Iraq, said to celebrate anyone's death shows how low our values have degenerated. She also said if his death will give reason for the withdrawal of troops and the ending of killing in Afghanistan then he will not have died in vain.

The Archbishop of the Church of England spoke out against the celebration of the killing. Even when the kids came back into Quaker Meeting this morning and reported on what they learned it was how responding with violence to violence only leads to more violence.

I've loved being here in England. Definitely a more mature and intelligent approach to life in my opinion.

  2. Thursday May 12 Front Page News in England in the Daily Telegraph

Begin Afghan withdrawal NOW, demands Cameron.
It was mentioned at the Tagore Festival that the US is obviously the main aggressor but England is one of the other main players and without England's involvement the argument of it being an international effort is seriously weakened. What England does is critical and it is good to see this on the front page.
However, the downside is when you read the article their military has all these arguments why you can't do it or that they will only withdraw support troops and not combat troops.

How do we take back our power?

"... take back our power or take the blame." from the song "America" by the English band Seize the Day.
